As a cell-phone user who was eager for a smartphone
with a QWERTY keyboard
, I was eager to finally try out the BlackBerry 8830.
The BlackBerry 8830 World Edition is definitely designed for business people on the go. In fact, it claims to be “the first CDMA smartphone capable of roaming globally on GSM/GPRS networks”. This means you can pretty much travel the world without having to change your phone, your phone number, or your e-mail.
I had to admit that using a BlackBerry takes a little getting used to. The 8830 has this tiny track-ball mouse for interface that is reminiscent of Atari’s Centipede video game. However, once I used the Setup Wizard, the BlackBerry opened up to me.
In a matter of minutes, I had figured out how to view my email online, and could surf the web. As a newbie to smartphones, I have quickly discovered that there are some limitations to surfing the web online with a tiny screen.
Just to reiterate a point, the BlackBerry 8830 is for businesspeople. There is no camera, but there is a microSD. That SD is tough to access, as a user must remove the entire battery cover to get to it. However, everything else works like clockwork once you get used to it.

Toshiba Satellite L500 and L550 Laptops
Toshiba has introduced two new widescreen laptops in the form of the Satellite L500 and L550. The L500 offers a 15.6-inch HD TruBrite display with 1366 x 768 resolution, meanwhile, the L550 sports a bigger 17.3-inch HD TruBrite display with power saving LED backlight technology, and a resolution of 1600 x 900 pixels. As for the rest of the specs remain the same for both machines, you’ll find a choice of either an Intel Celeron / Pentium / Core 2 Duo or AMD Athlon / Turion processor, a 500GB hard drive, a DVD burner, a VGA web camera supporting Toshiba’s Face Recognition software, an HDMI port, a 4-in-1 Bridge Media slot, two USB 2.0 ports, WiFi, Bluetooth, Ethernet and an additional eSATA/USB combo port. Both systems will be available in the third quarter of 2009 throughout Europe, Middle East and Africa.

Acer X1130 Business Projector
Acer today rolled out one of its newest business projectors, the X1130, that offers SVGA (800 x 600) resolution, 2,500:1 contrast ratio, 2,300 ANSI lumens, RGB, composite and S-video connectivity. The Acer X1130 is also a quiet projector since only 31dB noise level when operating. Its lamp also can run for up to 4,000 hours in eco mode. No word on pricing or worldwide availability so far.

Dell Releases Three New Vostro Laptop Series
Dell today introduced not only one but three new laptops from its Vostro series including the 13.3-inch Vostro 1320, the 15.4 inch 1520, and the 17 inch 1720. These budged-friendly notebooks are based on Intel’s Core 2 Duo processors and support up to 8GB of DDR2 memory. Graphics options include the integrated GMA X4500MHD and the dedicated NVIDIA GeForce 9300M GS 256MB. The new Vosto notebooks come with up to 250GB of hard drive space or a 128GB solid state drive, and with a slot-load DVD burner or Blu-Ray combo drive. The maximal display resolutions are 1280×800 on the 1320, 1440×900 on the 1520, and 1920 x 1200 on the 1720.

The Infrared Flashlight Video Recorder With Night Vision

Unlike normal flashlights, this flashlight is claimed to be the only Infrared Flashlight Video Recorder around. OTAS Video Camera Watch
Check out this unique video camera watch from japan based OTAS. The watch has 8GB of onboard memory and the ability to record 80 minutes of 352 x 288-pixel footage using the camera situated at about half past one on the face. It connects to the PC via USB port for transferring the files and charging. Sadly, the watch is only available in japan for about $110.

The VEDIA Idunn A1 is an MP3 player that was designed by Polish jeweler Jaroslaw Westermark. This luxurious MP3 player features 18 carat gold, high-grade silver, and Baltic amber. Only 10 of these players are available for purchase. But, if you really want to purchase it, you will have to pre-order and wait for about two months. No word on pricing so far.
The Timelapse Garden Video Camera
Check out this cool video camera from Hammacher Schlemmer which is specifically designed to make a timelapse video of your garden so that you can keep track of their progress. It has two different capture modes: as close as 20-inches or a 54-inch wide field of view with the capability to take a picture at one of six preset intervals, anywhere from every 5 seconds to every 24 hours and combines them into a single 1280 x 1024 resolution AVI movie file for easy playback on a computer.
